National Award-winning Madhubani artist Chandra Bhushan Kumar’s works are being featured at the exhibition Vriksha.

Organised by the Ministry of Rural Development (studio MORA), Vriksha features a series of expressions in wall art and hand-woven textiles through the eyes of artist.

The exhibition is the celebration of the relationship between humans and trees, through stories on fabric and paper in the collection. In all cultures known to us, trees have connected and have inspired the social fabric for centuries. Thus the humans have a special relationship with trees. “I believe that ‘trees’ represents the beauty and various beliefs and myths around it. I have tried to create products that have the freshness, fragrance and rustic charm of rural India, yet can be used in any contemporary setting,” says Chandra Bhushan, who has pioneered the contemporisation of Madhubani Art keeping its cultural heritage intact.

The Vriksha collection comprises of three different kinds of crafts. The Khatwa is an appliqué work on the cloth with the chain and straight stitched embroidery as a linear element, practised by the tribal women of Bihar. The collection is made by using organic, natural and hand-woven fabrics. Then there is Madhubani, which is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar state. Lastly, the exhibition will feature exquisite hand-woven linen saris in cotton and silk, with beautiful motifs carefully chosen and woven on these saris, determine to redefine the luxury in saris.

Anavila Misra, chief organiser, says, “We at studio MORA have been organising these exhibitions with such artists for seven years now. Chandra Bhushan’s ability to understand the environment around him reflects in his work. His knowledge of the Hindu scriptures and mythology is very deep and easily reflects in his work.”

The black and white drawings with occasional dash of red or green are Chandra Bhushan’s forte. The symmetry and consistency of his work is breathtaking. At the same time it has a surreal fluidity to them, which makes his work very different from others.
