A number of people suffering from osteoarthritis of knee joint after age of 55 years who are either preparing to get knee replaced or already got knee replaced have several inhibitions. They have doubts whether knee replacement will help them get rid of the pain completely and will they be able to start carrying out routine work like before. Experts believe that patients should know all the facts about this major surgery before opting for it.

“Knee replacement becomes necessary when the X-rays of knee joint shows obliteration of joint space with or without attrition of bones. After this indication of knee replacement it is better to get it done for better results,” Dr SS Soni, Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy Surgeon said.

“If it is delayed, the bones become weak, deformity increases and muscle strength decreases. So the latest knee cannot be applied and implant may also become loose,” he added.

Doctors say that pre-operative preparations are must. “Patient must always be mentally prepared for this major operation. One should ask the doctor the procedure in detail and discuss about implant design, since many type of artificial knee are available and they all have different function, range of movements, longevity, and cost,” said Dr Soni.

As per experts, after operation patient should always ask for bill, sticker and proof of implanted knee design, because by no other means it can be found out which knee has been implanted.

“Post operation, the most important is to take care of the operated knee, because by ignoring this, the chances of infections increases. Exercise to the maximum is the key for the best results. Better to get it done in your home city and avoid contact with direct heat like fire, heat therapy or heater etc,” Dr Soni said.

After total knee replacement, patient should visit doctor three monthly in first 2 years and half-yearly later on. In long term, taking calcium tablets and other bone-strengthening medicines should be avoided since in weaker bones implant may become loose earlier.
