The women's wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest in Bhubaneswar on Saturday over the molestation of a teenaged girl in Guwahati.

Women protesters took to the streets here and shouted anti-government slogans.

Protesters said atrocities are being committed on women such as rape, murder, looting and other forms of exploitation, and added that there is lack of safety measures for women in the country.

"Since the last few days, atrocities are being committed on women such as rape, murder, looting and other forms of exploitation on both women and children. The administration is not taking any action," said Surama Padhi, one of the protestors.

"Atrocities are being committed in every state. Women are being targeted the most," she added.

The protesters demanded stringent action against the atrocities committed on the women, so that they feel safe across the country.

"We are organising a rally because women are not secure here as well as in other states. They can be attacked anytime, be it day or night," said Arati Rani, another protestor.

Terming the Guwahati molestation case as very shameful, the BJP had earlier asked the Assam government to initiate immediate action and ensure that perpetrators of the act are given due punishment after a speedy trial.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday called for immediate action to be taken after a speedy trial of those who beat up and molested the girl in front of the camera.

The girl was molested on Monday as she was returning home from a party at a bar located in Guwahati's Post Office area.

The incident came to light after an amateur video of the incident was uploaded on YouTube. The video shows the mob, consisting of around 20 men, beating the girl before stripping her.

The shameful act continued for nearly 30 minutes till police arrived and rescued the girl, and handed her over to her parents.

Police later arrested four persons following public outrage over the incident.
