A Bengaluru court has directed Twitter to temporarily block the accounts of Congress and Bharat Jodo Yatra led by party leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly infringing the statutory copyright owned by MRT Music by illegally using sound records of the film KGF Chapter-2.
The complaint was filed by M Naveen Kumar, who manages MRT music, and FIR was lodged against Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh and Supriya Shrinate at Yeshwanthpur Police Station.
The complaint charged that Congress leaders used music from superhit Kannada film KGF-2, which violated copyright laws, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which travelled across Karnataka last month before moving to neighbouring Telangana.
According to the FIR, the music company has alleged that Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted two videos from Bharat Jodo Yatra which used songs from the film without its permission.
Restraining the Congress from using the music till the next date of hearing, the court ruled that prima facies materials established that the plaintif, NRT Music, would suffer losses and will encourage piracy at large.
“Plaintiff has specifically produced CD showing the side by side file i.e., original version of his copyrighted work with that of the illegally synchronized version. These prima facie materials available before this court at this stage establishes that if same is encouraged plaintiff who is in the business of acquiring cinematography films, songs, music albums etc., will be put to irreparable injury and further same leads to encouraging the piracy at large,” the court was quoted as saying according to an official statement by the music company.
The over 3,000-km-long Bharat Jodo Yatra has so far covered six states, namely Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra.
