Rape victim expects no justice from Ahmedabad police

The rape victim, Nirali (name changed), is a broken woman now and has lost all hope of ever getting justice.

"I will end my life soon," she said with tears in her eyes. "I am not only being denied justice but have also been humiliated several times by the police. Not only me, even my family members are being harassed by the police."

Nirali is 32 years old and is a mother of two. "I had thought that filing a police complaint will change my fate and the police would save me from being blamed as responsible for the rape committed on me," she said. "If I am alive, it is only because of my husband who has stood by and supported all through."

She said her brothers and her maternal uncle's family, too, had stood by her during these difficult times. "My parents died of tuberculosis in 1995. My maternal uncle took care of us after that," she said.

According to Nirali and her relatives, the police had done everything to spoil the case. "They did not make serious efforts to nab the accused nor did they try to find him at his place," one of he relatives said. "Instead, the police continued to harass us."

The police, however, deny all charges. "We are doing our best to nab the accused," police inspector, Dariapur police station, RH Panchani told DNA. "We had searched all his known hideouts, such as his house and his in-laws' place." Panchani is also the investigating officer of the case. He also said that the accused had applied for anticipatory bail and that the police would be opposing it in the court on Thursday.
