Rains leave many parts of Gujarat water-logged

AHMEDABAD: A heavy downpour lashed Ahmedabad and many parts of Gujarat were water-logged on Tuesday following overnight rains.
 
Most parts in south and central Gujarat, including major cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, experienced continuous rainfall since Monday night. Showers continued Tuesday without interruption.

South Gujarat was the worst hit by resultant water-logging with at least 2,100 people having to be shifted to safer places.

High alert against flood threat has been declared at Padra, Savli and Karjan talukas.

According to Gujarat state flood control room, 23 talukas of the state experienced 5 to 13 inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Jambughoda in Vadodara district recorded 14.5 inch rainfall while Kaprada and Umargam in south Gujarat had 13 and 10 inch of rainfall, respectively.

Thirty other places in Gujarat had 2 to 4 inch rainfall.

A usually dry Vishwamitri river that passes through the city of Vadodara was flowing at 17.5 ft level on Tuesday morning.

The water level at Dev dam over Vishwamitri river's Dhadhar branch was almost near the danger mark.

Daily life in Vadodara's western area was severely affected due to water-logging. Schools and colleges were closed. 

Rail traffic on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route was affected due to heavy rain. Several trains were running late Tuesday.

The water level in the Ukai dam was 94 metre (danger level 105 metre), Narmada dam 119m (danger mark 121 m) and Damanganga dam 68 (danger mark 71m).
