The Janata Dal (United) on Wednesday expelled Prashant Kishor and Pavan Varma from the party over their 'anti-party activities'. The two had recently upped their attacks against the party's alliance BJP over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and even questioned JD(U) over its stance on the law.

In a statement, the JD(U) said that Prashant Kishor was given the post of vice-president but he used the party for his own selfish purposes. "Even after being given the option to leave the party as per his wishes, he chose to use objectionable words against the party chief," the statement said, adding that "to ensure Prashant Kishor doesn't stoop even lower, it is important to let him go from the party."

Both Kishor and Varma took to Twitter and 'thanked' Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. “Thank you Nitish Kumar ji for freeing me from my increasingly untenable position of defending you and your policies. I wish you well in your ambition of being CM of Bihar at any cost,” said Varma.

"Thank you Nitish Kumar. My best wishes to you to retain the chair of Chief Minister of Bihar. God bless you," said Kishor.

The development comes a day after Kishor called Nitish a 'liar' for claiming that he was made the JD(U) vice-president at the direction of BJP leader Amit Shah.

"what a fall for you to lie about how and why you made me join JDU!! Poor attempt on your part to try and make my colour same as yours! And if you are telling the truth who would believe that you still have courage not to listen to someone recommended by Amit Shah?" Kishor had tweeted.

Responding to the remark, Nitish said, "Someone is tweeting, let him tweet. What do I have to do with that? One can stay in the JDU till one wants. One can also leave if one wants." He, however, didn't take Kishor's name.

He also warned that Kishor must adopt the basic structure of the party if he wants to remain a part of it. "Already he works as a strategist for various parties, but I'm making one thing clear, if he wants to remain in the party he will have to adopt the basic structure of the party," Kumar had said.

On January 23, the JD(U) supremo had said that Pavan Varma is free to leave the party and join any other party if he wants to.

Speaking on Varma's letter in which he spoke of Nitish Kumar's apprehensions on CAA and NRC that he 'expressed in private', the Bihar CM said, "If anyone has any issues then the person can discuss it within the party or at party meetings, but such kind of public statements are surprising. What if I start sharing what he said to me in public? If he wants to go to some other party that is his decision, he has my best wishes,” Kumar told the media persons.

A day earlier, Varma had written an open letter questioning JD(U)'s alliance with the BJP for Delhi Assembly poll 2020, saying Kumar's decision has left him 'deeply perplexed'.
