Over 6,800 railway employees under vigilance scanner

The railways conducted a total of 25,283 preventive checks between January and December last year, in which 215 gazetted and 6,650 non-gazetted officers were allegedly found to be involved in corruption.

Railways have initiated departmental action against 6,865 employees, including over 200 gazetted officers, for their alleged involvement in illegal practices.
 
A highest of 9,463 employees are from North Eastern Railways, followed by 1,203 in Northern Railways and 736 in South Central Railways, according to official data.
 
The railways conducted a total of 25,283 preventive checks between January and December last year, in which 215 gazetted and 6,650 non-gazetted officers were allegedly found to be involved in corruption.
 
A highest of 3,226 checks were carried out in North Eastern Railways, followed by 2,699 in Northern Railways, 2,667 in Southern Railways and 2,423 in North frontier Railways, it said.
 
There are about 13,000 gazetted and nearly eight lakh non-gazetted officers in Indian Railways which have a total strength of nearly 14 lakh.
 
"These checks are carried out regularly to ensure transparency. We will intensify our drive in the coming months to check leakage of revenue," a senior railway ministry official said.
 
The vast railway network is divided into 16 zones.
 
Departmental actions were also initiated against a total of 729 employees from Western Railways, 547 from Central Railways, 537 from Southern Railways and 414 from North Central Railways, according to the data.
