In the video, which is part of his speech in Alwar, Gandhi fails to say Kumbharam and instead ends up saying Kumbhakarna .
The Kumbharam Arya Lift Canal project is located near Malsisar town in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district.
For the uninitiated, Chaudhary Kumbharam Arya was a freedom fighter, tall Jat leader, parliamentarian and popular farmer leader in Rajasthan.
Kumbhakarna on the other hand is a demon from the epic Ramayana who’s Ravana’s younger brother with a penchant for deep sleep. Confusing his name with that of an antangonist from Ramyana is unlikely to pay in electoral dividents.
The gaffe is even more unfortunate considering political opponents often accuse the Congress of sleeping on the job during its 60-year rule in India after independence.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted: “Kumbhakarna used to sleep for 6 months Congress slept for 60 years and deprived India of development.”
The gaffe is even more unfortunate when one considers the belief that Kumbhakarna's affair with continuous REM sleep also started because of a mispronunciation.
He had, along with Ravana and Vibhishana, performed a major yajna and penance to please Lord Brahma.
However, when the time came for asking for a boon, he asked he asked for Nidraasana (bed for sleeping) instead of Indraasana (seat of Indra),
He is also believed to have asked for Nidravatvam (sleep) instead of Nirdevatyam (annihilation of Devas).
This led to his brother Ravana to beg Brahma to undo the boon, which later was just halved, so Kumbhakarna spent only six months sleeping.
This isn’t Rahul Gandhi’s first rodeo. He once confused the words brashtachaar and balatkaar and once referred to Karnataka Indira canteens as Amma canteen. While it might be his Amma (mother), the term Amma canteens are used to refer to similar establishments in the state of Tamil Nadu. His most famous statement however was the impromptu physics lesson when he said Dalits needed the ‘escape velocity of Jupiter’
