Hoysala Empire temples in Karnataka have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage. It became the 42nd UNESCO-listed site in India. The development comes a day after Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan in West Bengal was listed as a heritage site on Sunday.

'Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala', the Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid and Somnathapura in Karnataka had been on UNESCO's Tentative list since April 15, 2014. Karnataka is already home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Hampi ruins, Pattadakal monuments and the Western Ghats.

India had sent this as a nomination for consideration as world heritage for the year 2022-2023. The Hoysala Empire flourished between the 10th and 14th centuries. It is known for its contributions to art, architecture, and culture in the southern region of India.
