Police have arrested a woman who had allegedly thrown her new-born baby girl on a heap of rubbish here, an official said on Wednesday. The city police yesterday arrested Mala Devi, who had thrown her new-born baby girl, wrapped in a gunny bag, on a heap of rubbish that was lying some distance away from her rented accommodation here on Sunday, he said.

The infant has been taken to PGIMS at Rohtak where she is under treatment, police said. While the police registered a case of exposure and abandonment of a new-born child against the woman, she was on Tueday arrested and produced in a local court which sent her to judicial custody.

Mala Devi, wife of Hari Mehto of Bihar, who was receiving treatment at the local civil hospital after she suffered from bleeding as a result of the delivery, was found there by the police. Police investigations revealed that Mala had abandoned her baby girl that was her sixth child, out of her penury.

She told police that she had already three daughters and two sons and while she herself and her husband both worked as labourers, their combined wages were totally inadequate to support such big family.
