Cricketers like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul unfollowed popular Punjabi singer Shubh on social media in the backdrop of the India-Canada tensions due to the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Nijjar. However, Shubh is not the only Punjabi singer who has faced backlash over the Khalistan controversy.

Shubh, a popular Punjabi singer, was embroiled in a major controversy when he had shared a distorted map India, which showed Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab omitted out of the country, during the crackdown on Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh.

Due to the tweet, Shubh had sparked allegations of being a Khalistan sympathizer, and since has been the brunt of controversies. Due to the tense situation between India and China, Shubh’s concert tour in India is now under threat.

However, he is not the first Punjabi singer to be embroiled in such a controversy. Ultra-popular singer AP Dhillon, who recently featured in an autobiographical documentary, was also slammed for “promoting” the Khalistani movement.

During the crackdown on Amritpal Singh and his aides, AP Dhillon had taken to social media and posted “Pray for Punjab”, where netizens accused him for sympathizing with Khalistan movement and its supporters.

Apart from him, Punjab singer Diljit Dosanjh, also based in Canada, has been involved in a public feud with actress Kangana Ranaut who has multiple times accused him of supporting insurgency in Punjab during the farmer’s protests and the Amritpal Singh crackdown.

Other Punjab singers who have been accused of posting similar quotes on Punjab and sparking a Khalistan movement controversy are Tarsem Jassar, Sharry Maan, and Himmat Sandhu. Singer Karan Aujla had also taken to social media asking, “What is the fault of Punjab and Punjab’s mothers?”.

Jazz Dhami had slammed the situation in Punjab in harsher terms during the Amritpal Singh crackdown, questioning the government. He had written that Sikhs are being targeted by the government in India, a remark that met with a lot of criticism.
