Deleted from voters' list? Here's how you can register your name again before 2019 Assembly polls

After the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India decided to ‘clean’ the voters list by deleting all non-existent voters. This led to a scenario where 11 lakh voters’ names were deleted from the said list. However, there is still hope for genuine voters who were denied the right to vote in the BMC elections. Voters can now register themselves online for the Assembly elections in 2019. 

“The Chief Electoral Officer, appointed by the Election Commission, will be able to address this issue of voters’ names getting deleted. However, voters will have to fill up form number 6 on ceo.maharashtra.gov.in as a new registration. Voters can submit the form online, and then submit a printout to the Electoral Registration Officer in the collector’s office, or at the nearest tehsil office or to the office of the designated officer,” said a State Election Commission official.

He added that the list of voters for the civic, assembly and parliamentary elections is the same. So, voters can register their names and cross check it online to make sure it has been included before the next election.  

A few hours after the toll-free number was activated, the Shiv Sena headquarters received 150 calls with complaints of missing names on the voters list. The compiled list of voters’ complaints will be submitted to the Election Commission and High Court. 

“While registering complaints, details including name, address, contact number and how many names from the family or building are missing, are noted down to avoid discrepancy,” said a Shiv Sena source.
