As Maharashtra is seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases and a near-total lockdown has been imposed in Nagpur, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said that "lockdown is required in some places" to curb the virus spread.

"In some days, we have to take a decision -- in some areas, decision of lockdown needs to be taken," Thackeray said after getting the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Sir JJ Hospital.

The Chief Minister pointed out that cases were continuing to increase in many places in the state, including Mumbai, Nashik, Pune, Akola, Nagpur Circles.

"People must take all precautions and follow the protocols strictly. All those who are eligible for the vaccine at this stage must get it," he urged.

Curbs and restrictions in some or other forms are already implemented in Pune (night curfew), Nagpur (near-total lockdown), Aurangabad, Palghar, Thane, Akola, Amravati, with district collectors authorised to take the call as the local situation warrants.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai and several other parts of Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a warning that the authorities may impose a lockdown in Mumbai if coronavirus cases continue to rise.

“As of now, it is not on our plan. But certainly, if the cases go up like this, and if we are not getting equal support from citizens, then we can keep that option open after a detailed review. That decision will be taken at an appropriate time,” Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani told CNN-News18.

Kakani added that BMC is now devising a strategy to shift its focus from slums to high-rise buildings as the COVID-19 cases are rising in buildings. Kakani noted that around 90 per cent new cases are coming from high-rises and buildings and this is the reason why the BMC is now focusing on the buildings and not the slums.

On Wednesday, Maharashtra touched 13,659 fresh cases -- the highest since 13,395 cases were recorded on October 8, 2020.

The state has touched a progressive total of 22,52,057 cases till date and 52,610 deaths -- both highest in India -- and the count increasing afresh since the past two weeks.
