Call it just desserts, but in an ironic turn of how they thought the festivities would go, a special team of gun-blazing police stormed the birthday party of a city-based gangster at the outskirts of the city and rounded up 75 fellow history-sheeters late on Tuesday night.

Over 100 rowdies — armed with knives and sickles — gathered to celebrate the birthday of Binu, who had been hiding for a couple of years, at a lorry shed at Malayambakkam near Poonamallee along the Outer Ring Road. Binu kicked off the celebrations by cutting a cake with a machete while fireworks and party poppers were set off. With birthday cake, biryani and crates of beer, the party was going extremely well until the police crashed it.

The police got to know of the "secret" birthday bash when they intercepted a vehicle during a routine check-up at Pallikaranai. When the police questioned the three persons travelling in a car carrying knives, one of the passengers, small-time rowdy Pallu Mathan wanted in assault and extortion cases, revealed that they were on their way to the birthday party of Binu where history-sheeters from across the city would gather for the occasion.

City police commissioner AK Viswanathan then formed a special team headed by S Sarvesh Raj, deputy commissioner of police, Ambattur to round-up and arrest the criminals. As the police reached the lorry shed, they rounded up the rowdies and started arresting them. Many, including Binu, escaped as they saw the police approaching.

However, even as the police managed to round up 60 of them, around 15 managed to hide in a nearby village and were arrested with the help of the local people. A total of 45 two-wheelers, seven cars and over 15 weapons and cell phones have been seized by the police. "Binu became infamous in 2000 and he has three murder and 28 other cases against him. Till 2012, he was a resident of Choolaimedu," explained a police officer. "Most of the other men have at least a couple of criminal cases pending against them. Most of them are facing cases of murder or robbery, " he said.

All the arrested rowdies were taken to different police stations for questioning to ascertain whether they were planning any attacks in the city.
