Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday met Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) Mayawati, indicating the firming up of anti-BJP alliances beyond Uttar Pradesh. "Our organisation in Uttar Pradesh will lend support to the alliance," Tejashwi said.

Akhilesh Yadav also said the move is likely to cement the alliance. "People of the country are unhappy with the BJP and want to remove it. The alliance (with BSP) in Uttar Pradesh has been received well," Akhilesh said.

The move is not only likely to pool together different castes and communities, it's also likely to keep the Congress in check. The Congress has been a close ally of the RJD in Bihar, but sources say the tie-up is in troubled waters as the party wants more seats than what RJD supremo Lalu Yadav is ready to give.

Mayawati's strong base among Dalits can give the RJD, which is popular among Yadavs and Muslims, a formidable edge in Bihar. At the same time, it can also help keep the Congress in check.

Stressing that the BSP-SP alliance has gone down well, Tejashwi said Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will decide who will be in power at the Centre. "It is not just UP, but also the entire country where the message of alliance has gone. The people of UP and Bihar will decide as to who will come to power at the Centre," Tejashwi said, after meeting Akhilesh and Mayawati.

"UP has 80 seats and Bihar has 40, while Jharkhand too sends 14 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Together, they account for 134 seats. The BJP currently holds 115 of these seats. But following our alliance, it will lose 100 of these," Tejashwi added.

The RJD leader, who arrived in Lucknow on Sunday night, hoped that the alliance formed in Uttar Pradesh will be extended to Bihar, and that all parties will work together to defeat BJP.

Sources said that despite the alliance being announced in Uttar Pradesh, parties like RJD could be accommodated on isolated seats on the lines of Kairana, where Tabassum Hasan won on an RLD ticket in a Lok Sabha by-election though she had close links with the Samajwadi Party. In return, the RJD, which already has its alliance with the Congress in Bihar, could accommodate some candidates of BSP and SP in Bihar, the sources said.
