The Yamuna River's water level has brought about significant disturbances within the city. As of Thursday night, the water level was recorded at 208.63 meters, and as of 9 am today, it has slightly decreased to 208.40 meters. However, this measurement still exceeds the danger mark by three meters, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The rising water has profoundly impacted the daily lives of people, prompting the government to implement various measures in response.
To ensure the safety of students, schools have been closed due to the flood-like conditions. Government employees, except those engaged in emergency services, have been advised to work remotely from their homes. Similarly, private offices have been encouraged to adopt the work-from-home option. These actions are aimed at minimizing the risks and inconveniences posed by the high water level.
Numerous significant areas in Delhi, such as the secretariat, Supreme Court, ITO, and Civil Lines, are currently grappling with waterlogging. Consequently, there have been major disruptions in traffic, especially along the Outer Ring Road and other affected routes. In an effort to alleviate congestion, traffic diversions have been put into effect. However, these diversions have resulted in significant delays for commuters, leading to frustrating traffic jams.

According to the latest report from the Delhi Government, the current water level at the Old Railway Bridge (ORB) is 208.07 meters as of 9pm. Yesterday at 8pm, a discharge of 57363 cusecs of water occurred from the Hathi Kund Barrage. The Central Water Commission (CWC) issued a forecast today at 11:30 am, stating that the water level at ORB is expected to remain around 208.05 meters between 10pm and 12am. Subsequently, it is anticipated to decrease, as reported by ANI.
The weather office has issued a 'yellow' alert for Saturday, predicting moderate rain and thundershowers in Delhi. This comes as some parts of the city are already dealing with flood-like conditions. On Friday, areas such as Laxmi Nagar, Ayanagar, Lodhi Road, Mungeshpur, and certain localities in east Delhi experienced light rainfall. Other areas, including Lutyens' Delhi, also saw a light drizzle.
The Delhi Government has reported that a total of 25,478 individuals have been successfully evacuated from the flood-affected areas. Currently, there are 22,803 people taking refuge in tents and shelters. To aid in the rescue efforts, 16 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the districts affected by the floods. The heavy flow of river water and subsequent backflow, along with embankment breaches, have caused flooding in certain low-lying regions of Delhi.

"Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, conducted an inspection of the Yamuna Barrage and provided an update on the situation. Currently, out of the 32 gates, five are closed, leading to waterlogging in the surrounding areas. The government is actively working on reopening these five gates to allow the water to flow back into the barrage. Kejriwal assured that every effort is being made to restore normalcy in the affected areas."

On Friday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the Delhi government plans to reactivate the Okhla water treatment plant due to the decline in Yamuna river water levels.

In a tragic incident, Delhi witnessed its first fatality resulting from waterlogging in the capital city. Three young children, aged between 12 and 15, lost their lives in the Mukundpur area of the northwest district. Reports indicate that the children ventured into the water, only to tragically drown. The authorities have successfully retrieved their bodies and promptly transported them to the hospital for further procedures.
Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced on Friday that several crematoriums in Delhi, including those at Nigambodh Ghat, Geeta Colony, Wazirabad, and Sarai Kale Khan, have been temporarily closed due to the ongoing flooding in the city. In light of this situation, Oberoi took to Twitter to advise people to explore alternative cremation grounds. Additionally, she shared a list of alternative locations where funeral services could be conducted.
Sharat Kumar, the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Seelampur, reported that although the water levels have slightly decreased, the situation remains critical, and our preparedness for any emergencies remains high. Currently, severe waterlogging persists in 4-5 locations. As part of our ongoing relief efforts, we have successfully rescued around 900 individuals and 600 animals from the affected areas. The relief operations are ongoing, with the NDRF team remaining on standby for immediate assistance if required. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported thus far.
The water level in the Yamuna River was recorded at 208.42 meters at 8 am, followed by a decrease to 208.38 meters at 10 am and further down to 208.35 meters at 11 am. Subsequently, the water level dropped to 208.27 meters at 1 pm and 208.25 meters at 3 pm.
There is a possibility of a slight increase in rainfall on the 17th and 18th of July. However, it is important to note that the flooding in Delhi is not solely caused by localized rainfall, but rather due to the significant inflow of water into the Yamuna River from Himachal Pradesh and other states.
Delhi traffic police have announced the closure of traffic movement on both carriageways of Vikas Marg, extending from Laxmi Nagar T-point to ITO, and vice versa. This action has been taken due to the overflow of flood water in the area. In light of this situation, commuters are advised to consider alternative routes such as NH 24 via Akshardham-Nizamuddin.

In response to the alarming situation caused by a breach, flooding has ensued in the ITO area and its surrounding regions. Dedicated engineers have been tirelessly working throughout the night to address the issue. Recognising the urgency of the matter, CM has personally directed the Chief Secretary to reach out for assistance from the Army/NDRF.

Yamuna's water level may be decreasing, but the flood crisis in Delhi still persists. Yamuna river is still flowing 3 meters above the danger mark. In such a situation, many areas of the capital are still submerged. Water has filled near ITO. Moving beyond the settlements on the banks of the river, the water reached the Red Fort and the Ring Road. Due to this, the entry of tourists to the Red Fort has been restricted today.
Surender Singh Yadav, the Special CP of Traffic in Delhi, provided insights into the current flood situation in the city and outlined the additional measures being taken by the management to address the issue.
"4,500 police deployments have been done in all areas of Delhi. The movements of the Kawariyas are also being monitored. A decrease in water level in areas like Kashmiri Gate is witnessed. But the Ring road area towards Wazirabad is still flooded. We are trying to open the Bhairon Marg till evening. Traffic can be witnessed on NH 44."
