Around half of all diabetics show no symptoms, making awareness a crucial fight against the condition that affects up to 20% of our population in some pockets of the country.
This year as a part of its annual event Techfest that will be held between December 16 and 18, IIT-Bombay has joined hands with the Rotary Club in Mumbai to conduct around 200 awareness and testing camps for diabetes.
100 camps will be conducted on September 25 across the city along with the Rotary club. IIT-Bombay will conduct 100 more across 8 other states in India on its own, with the intention of setting a Guiness World Record. This awareness campaign is a part of the institute's CURED (Can You Really Escape Diabetes) initiative. "Our aim is to test around one lakh people during the camps," said Arun Bhargava, chief project director of Rotary for the region.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, dibetologist Dr Pradeep Gadge urged IIT students to think of solving several problems that doctors face with the use of technology. "The insulin, delivered to the patient, needs to be made more effective and you can collaborate with doctors to reduce their work load and improve treatment."
Pathologist Indumati Gopinathan advised that one must get sugar levels tested once every two years post 30.
