PUBG Mobile India had announced their relaunch of the game in grand style in November as gamers got a blockbuster Diwali gift. With plenty of teasers and announcements on social media, it seemed that PUBG Mobile India was coming back to the country in grand style after the Government banned 118 Chinese Apps in September. In that interim period, PUBG Mobile India removed the Chinese entity of Tencent, tied up with Microsoft Azure over data and user protection as well as registered itself as a company on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs website. Yet, all these steps have not been enough for PUBG Mobile India to come back to the country. In fact, the lack of response from the Government has stalled PUBG Mobile India’s momentum and it seems that the game will only be available for Indian gamers only around February 2021.

What are the main reasons for the Government of India not giving PUBG Mobile India the green signal for a relaunch? The main reason is the blanket ban on the 118 Chinese apps. According to some government experts who told Inside Sports, MEITY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) has collectively banned the Chinese app operations in the country. According to the stated policy, the Government will not treat anyone differently or give special favours and meeting a banned entity individually goes against the norms of the administration.

This has a clear message: PUBG Mobile India will NOT get any special status. The second and main reason is that there is still a lot of anti-China sentiment in the country. The Galwan Valley tensions have still not simmered. When all the 118 apps, including PUBG Mobile India were banned, the main reason given was that these apps compromise national security. When that factor is weighed, it seems very unlikely that PUBG Mobile India will get a special preference.

PUBG Gamers upset

Many PUBG Gamers are now frustrated with the lack of clarity and communication from both the Government and PUBG Corporation. It must be understood that there are plenty of gamers whose life depends on gaming and this is a big blow. But, the prevailing anti-China sentiment means that PUBG Mobile India’s entry into India is going to be delayed for a long time unless the Government changes its stance. For PUBG Mobile India to make a comeback, the permission from MEITY, essentially the Government is mandatory and there can be no negotiations around it.

With the Government not willing to give any special privilege to PUBG Mobile India, the wait will only drag on from this point in time.
