His Tanglish song Kolaveri may have become an overnight sensation, breaking all barriers, internationally. But actor-singer Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja, known as Dhanush, is yet to allow the craze to sink in. “I’m actually blank about it. I’m trying to forget it and concentrate only on my shoot now. It hasn’t become real for me. I’m not even taking it seriously,” laughs Dhanush.

Being a National Award-winning actor and coming from a well-known film family down South, one would think Rajinikanth’s son-in-law didn’t need to worry about being recognised. But Dhanush insists on being called an actor first and informs that Kolaveri hasn’t really got him recognition. “Nobody from my industry has spoken to me about the song… I haven’t got any recognition from my industry,” he says, adding, “I’m not a trained singer, I’m just a bathroom singer. I’m an actor first.”

The song, which has garnered over nine million hits online, had been trending on Twitter for several days and has even been picturised in a video by Japanese women dancing to it, has undoubtedly become the new-age youth anthem. And Dhanush admits he’s extremely flattered. “Now everywhere I go, I’m asked to sing the song. I’m aware of all the videos put up online. It feels nice to see people making their own versions of the song,” he says.

The song is part of the Tamil film 3, directed by his wife Aishwarya Rajinikanth Dhanush. So is it tough to act in his wife’s film? “No, it’s like going to work for any other director. It’s only work at workplace; we never mix the two,” says Dhanush, revealing that they don’t talk about work at home either. The actor writes poetry and “songs like Kolaveri” in his free time. But his primary aim now is to make his directorial debut in Bollywood. “I have the script ready. I’m not familiar with Hindi as such, but I’m doing my homework. By next year end, I should start making the film,” Dhanush signs off.
