After getting rave reviews and hitting records in its opening week in the US, Slumdog Millionaire is set to have a strategic release in January 2009. The film, starring Anil Kapoor, Dev Patel, Irrfan Khan and Freida Pinto is directed by Danny Boyle of The Beach fame will release in English and Hindi in both India and Pakistan. Danny’s human tale centers around a resilient and happy-go-lucky boy from the slums of Mumbai whose adventures take him from of begging on the streets to the wildly popular game show stage of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? where he surprises everyone with his knowledge. The film has won people’s choice award in Toronto film festival and was given a rousing reception at the London Film Festival where it was the closing attraction.
“It’s in keeping with our studio’s commitment to produce and distribute world-class local-language films. It’s an extraordinary film which tells a classic Indian story,” said Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios India. And guess what’s the title of the Hindi version? It’s called Slumdog Millionaire - Kaun Banega Crorepati. Hmmm.
