Jimmy Neesham scripted his comeback in New Zealand's One-Day International (ODI) squad in style as he smashed five sixes in an over and overall six big hits in the last two overs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Neesham struck five sixes, a two and a single in an over from Thisara Perera that included a no-ball as he made 47 not out from only 13 balls in New Zealand's first innings in the ODI at Bay Oval.

The ODI record for fastest belongs to South Africa's AB de Villiers who needed just 16 balls to reach 50 runs.

Neesham's knock and opener Martin Guptill's 138 off 139 took New Zealand to 371 runs in 50 overs - the highest-ever ODI total at the Bay Oval.

After a stunning show with the bat, Neesham replicated that with the ball as well. Sri Lankan openers, NiroshaNiroshan Dickwella  Danushka Gunathilaka, gave their side a flying start as the tourists already had 100-plus runs on the board without the loss of a wicket.

It was Neesham who made the crucial breakthroughs as he sent back both the openers in his two back to back over. He first dismissed Gunathilaka in the 18th over and followed that with the wicket of Dickwella in the 20th over.
