IPL 2020: Chennai Super Kings to leave for UAE on August 21, Harbhajan Singh to join later

Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the three-time champions will leave for the UAE on August 21 and that Harbhajan Singh will join the squad later due to some family problems.

Chennai Super Kings, the three-time IPL champions will leave for the United Arab Emirates on August 21 as they aim to prepare for the tournament in a bio-secure environment. Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to DNA that the squad will leave on Friday which is August 21. MS Dhoni’s side are currently in Chepauk for a short training camp which. With the squad leaving tomorrow, all players have undergone two coronavirus tests before they leave and luckily all have turned out to be negative.

However, there were reports that Harbhajan Singh might not join the squad that is flying to the UAE. Viswanathan said, “Yes, Harbhajan is not flying with us to the UAE but he will join the squad at a later date. He has a family problem and that is why he is staying back for a bit.”

The BCCI have issued strict guidelines in the SOPs as to what each player and the franchise will have to do in their bio-secure environment. When asked whether the families of the players and fans will be allowed to travel, Viswanathan replied, “No. The families will not be permitted to travel. The fans are also not going to come for this. There will be virtual engagements with the Chennai Super Kings fan groups during this period.” Whether Viswanathan will travel to the UAE for the IPL, he replied, “Yes, I am planning to go to the UAE for the tournament but at a later stage.”

Bio-secure IPL

The BCCI has issued strict guidelines on what the players and the teams need to do in order to adhere to the bio-secure environment. The tournament is being played in the UAE as the large number of coronavirus cases in India has made it dangerous for the T20 league to be played here.

The IPL 2020 was postponed from it’s original slot in April thanks to the lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After the postponement of the ICC World T20 due to the second outbreak of the coronavirus in Australia, IPL 2020 finally got a slot in September-November. With UAE having a less-strict quarantine period, it was decided that the tournament would be held in the country for the second time since 2014.
