Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his support for Rishabh Pant's potential return to the Indian cricket team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Pant, who has been recovering from a serious accident, is set to make a comeback during the Indian Premier League for Delhi Capitals.

Despite Pant's absence from competitive cricket since a harrowing car crash in December 2022, Gavaskar is optimistic about his contribution to the national team. In a recent conversation on a Star Sports special ahead of India's T20I series against Afghanistan, Gavaskar emphasized Pant's game-changing abilities in every format.

'I see him (KL Rahul) as a wicketkeeper as well, but I will say one thing before that: if Rishabh Pant is fit on even one leg, he should come in the team because he is a game-changer in every format. If I am the selector, I will put his name first,' stated Gavaskar.

Addressing the possibility of KL Rahul taking on the role of wicketkeeper, Gavaskar highlighted the importance of balance in the team. He stated, 'However if Rishabh Pant is unavailable and KL Rahul keeps wickets, it will be good because the balance will also get created. Then you have the option to play him as an opener or use him in the middle order as a finisher at No. 5 or No. 6.'

Gavaskar discussed the significance of IPL form in team selection for the T20 World Cup, emphasizing the need to consider players' performances in March, April, and May. Additionally, he suggested that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have an ordinary IPL but make valuable contributions in a few matches, their experience should be acknowledged.

In an 'out-of-the-box' suggestion, Gavaskar proposed the inclusion of Kohli and Rohit in the team, even if not in the playing 15, to boost the team's confidence. He stated, 'If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in the dugout, imagine what will be the team’s confidence.'

As the T20 World Cup approaches, Gavaskar's insights shed light on the intricate considerations surrounding team selection and the potential impact of experienced players on the squad's morale.
