Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a appeal to the national selectors and team management, urging them to place their trust in young talents such as Tilak Varma to address the middle-order conundrum. This plea comes as star middle-order batsman KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer races against time to recover from injury in order to be fit for the upcoming 50-over Cricket World Cup.

The Hyderabad left-hander stylish batsman has impressed everyone with his batting skills in the ongoing India vs west indies T20I series with scores of 39, 50, and 49 not out in three T20Is.

“The emergence of Tilak Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in 1st T20I. His batting style is very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot like Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull shot. Generally, India batters won’t set up to play the pull shot. It is something they develop later. But his game looks like he has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the rope like an Aussie batter."

“This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin also added that most of the top countries would not have quality finger spinners who can trouble a left-hander batsman. “And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial,” he added.

Ashwin's remarks were supported by the former chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad, who expressed his openness to including Varma in the final 15 if Shreyas Iyer does not meet the selection criteria.

“Look at his List A record for Hyderabad. He has played 25 List A games and has an average of 55 plus (56.18). Five hundreds and five half-centuries. It means at least 50 per cent times he is converting fifties into hundreds. A strike rate of 100 plus,” Prasad told  PTI.
