Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed has become the first player in the history of the one-day internationals to come in as a concussion substitute. In the second ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin was hit on the helmet by the Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera.

The incident took place in the 47th over of Bangladesh's batting innings. A bouncer from Chameera crashed straight into Saifuddin's helmet when he attempted a hook but missed it. Saifuddin was run out on the same delivery when he tried to steal a single with Mushfiqur Rahim who was batting on an unbeaten hundred on the other end. The physio rushed to the ground as he walked off with him.

An update in the second half before the completion of the match from BCB confirmed that Saifuddin was kept under observation after scans didn't reveal anything serious.

By the virtue of the same, Taskin Ahmed, a like-for-like replacement being a fast bowler was drafted into the XI and became the first player in the men's ODIs to come in as a concussion substitute. As it has happened once in women's ODIs when Shabika Gajnabi replaced Chinelle Henry for West Indies against India in 2019.

While it has happened many times in Test cricket, the most famous being the Marnus Labuschagne replacing Steve Smith in the 2019 Ashes, it has also taken place in the T20Is twice, with the most famous being Yuzvendra Chahal replacing Ravindra Jadeja.

Bangladesh eventually won the second ODI as well by 103 runs (DLS method) as they restricted Sri Lanks to 141/9 in their 40 overs in the adjusted target. Batting first the hosts put on 246 runs owing to a fantastic knock by Rahim of 125 runs off just 127 balls.

Bangladesh has now taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match series.
