Vijay Varma responds to netizen calling Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui's The Lunchbox 'flop film'

Cinephiles on social media are these days sharing a list of movies that they loved but flopped badly at the box office, as per the trend 'A flop film that I secretly loved'. When an X (previously known as Twitter) user named The Cineprism included The Lunchbox in his list of '10 flop movies that I secretly loved', Vijay Varma came forward in the film's defence.

Reacting to the user's post, the Darlings actor wrote, "The lunchbox is the biggest independent film from India. It did incredible business and is considered a global masterpiece. Not a flop in any parameter." The 2013 emotional drama, directed by Ritesh Batra, featutred Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles.

Along with his post, Vijay shared a snapshot of The Lunchbox's box office collection of Rs 110 crore with the details, "The Lunchbox grossed Rs 71 million (Rs 7 crore 10 lakhs) in its first weekend of release in India and Rs 110 million (Rs 11 crore) in its first week. The film continued to gross significant amounts over the next few weeks, earning over Rs 200 million (Rs 20 crore) in the first three weeks and another estimated Rs 40-50 lakhs on its fourth weekend."

The Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer was one of the most well-received Indian films in the international film festivals in the recent past. The Ritesh Batra directorial was even screened at the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 and was also nominated for a BAFTA for the category Best Film Not in the English Language.

This led to considerable interest in the film overseas. The Lunchbox holds the record of being the highest-grossing Indian film in most overseas markets. These include eight different nations of Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, and Norway.
