Released in 2010, the action comedy film Dabangg has Salman Khan playing one of his most memorable characters of his life, a corrupt police officer named Chulbul Pandey. Winning the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, the film has become a cult classic over the years.
But do you know that Dabangg also helped another cult classic in its making? Anurag Kashyap said that he used the Salman Khan-starrer's fame to get place for shooting his two part crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur in Varanasi, because Dabangg was directed by Abhinav Kashyap, Anurag's real brother.
Speaking to Cyrus Broacha on his podcast Cyrus Says, the filmmaker stated, "The greatest thing that happened in my family also became my largest tragedy. I was this filmmaker who made Paanch and Black Friday that didn’t release. Then, No Smoking, that bombed. And, my brother went and made Dabangg. And he hits a century. Super hit. And then everybody is like, ‘Kuch seekho (learn something).'"
The Bombay Velvet director also shared that nobody in his hometown Varanasi knew about Black Friday or No Smoking so he got permissions to shoot Gangs of Wasseypur using Dabangg's name. "When we were shooting Gangs of Wasseypur, we had to find locations, and nobody knew my films. We were shooting in Banaras, my home town, and nobody knew any of the films I had made. Because they probably never released in Banaras. So, we had to go to the location and go like, ‘Have you seen Dabangg? The one who made Dabangg is his brother. His brother was shooting that film. And then they will be like, ‘Your brother made Dabangg? Come, come.’ That’s how we used to get locations. Dabangg got me a lot of things done", he added.
After the mammoth success of Dabangg, Dabangg 2 and Dabangg 3, directed by Arbaaz Khan and Prabhu Deva, were made in 2012 and 2019, but both of them failed to create the desired impact as the first part. Abhinav Kashyap directed Besharam in 2013 and was never given an opporunity to direct again after Ranbir Kapoor's film bombed at the box office.
