Homes were attacked and vehicles damaged or burnt as Sunday’s Sarjapura bandh over the alleged murder of a Class X student turned violent.

Although the situation was brought under control by evening, extra policemen were deployed in the village to maintain law and order, police said

The bandh call came soon after police found the body of Shashi Kumar, 16, on Sunday morning in Nilgiri grove near Peninsula Colony, Dodda Timmasandra, on Sarjapura Road. Shashi’s throat had been slit.

Shashi had been missing since Friday evening when he went out with his schoolmates.

Shashi’s parents Narayanaswamy and Rathnamma alleged that his classmates who visited their home on Friday afternoon took him out and killed him.

Santosh, brother of Shashi, gave their names.
“My brother’s friends ‘cutting’ Seena, Saddam, Hemaraju, Nijam and Mahesh took him from the house and killed him,” he said.
The family alleged that even after they filed a missing complaint on Friday evening, the police failed to trace Shashi.
The cause for the alleged murder was as shocking as the gruesome act itself.
According to police, jealousy over a school team’s victory drove rivals to kill him. The victim and his alleged killers were old enemies.

Last week, SVP High School organised a volleyball tournament. Shashi’s team won the first prize and he played a vital role in the victory.

After the game, some students questioned the team’s win and began assaulting Shashi. He returned the blows. The situation was going out of control when, luckily, some others intervened and pacified them.

Villagers were intrigued when Shashi went missing on Friday evening.

When his body was found on Sunday morning, the supporters of Shashi’s family went on the rampage and began attacking houses of some dalits.

They also targeted Saddam’s house and damaged vehicles including KSRTC buses. They also set a push cart on fire, police said.

Although police baton-charged the mob, the situation was still out of control.

The angry villagers went to Sarjapura police station where they stood shouting slogans.

The police registered a murder case and shifted the body to Anekal Government Hospital for post mortem.

“We will hold talks with the Anekal panchayat member Nagaraju (BJP) and Congress leader Narayana Swamy to bring peace. The culprits will be arrested at the earliest,” said D Prakash, superintendent of police, Bangalore Rural.

“We detained two boys aged between 17 and 18 years. They are dropouts who were studying in the school. Of two others absconding, one is studying class X in same school,” Prakash said.

“On interrogation, we found that the four accused had fights with Shashi over the past three years,” Prakash added.
The bandh and ensuing violence affected traffic on the Sarjapura-Tamil Nadu Road and Sarjapura-Bangalore and Anekal Road.
