Reaffirming their stance, both the rationalist challenger, Narendra Nayak, and the astrologer, Y Bhaskar Shetty, who has picked up the gauntlet, (DNA Dec 23), have said the contest whether astrology is a fraud or not should be held for the benefit of the society.
Nayak, president of Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, on Wednesday said: “We shall give him the date, time and place of birth of 10 living instead of living or dead.
“The testing shall take place in Mangalore and we shall intimate him the date. The details will be in numbered and sealed envelopes, one of which shall have the details of the date, time and place of birth and the corresponding one will have the solutions along with the name and mobile number of the individual concerned and so the details can be verified. I do hope this would fulfil the conditions of transparency that Shetty calls for,” said Nayak.
“There will be 20 envelopes and he needs to pick only 10 of them. The astrologer can say: 1. Male or female, 2. Educational qualification, 3. Marital status, 4. Field of work.”
“If Shetty loses, he will have to agree that astrology is a fraud and stop its practice hence forth. If he is proved right, I will agree that it is a science and will become his disciple, obey his orders and will devote the rest of my life for its study and propagation,” Nayak said. Shetty said he was prepared to see the end of it. “It may be an occasion to tell the ignoramus on astrology some facts of life and home truths.”
On Wednesday, Nayak made his challenge public through
DNA. He said that he is willing to give his entire life savings (Rs10 lakh) to the astrologer who can meet his challenge. While many older astrologers spurned the offer, Shetty picked up the gauntlet.
