Government to regulate admissions into Deemed Universities

Minister for Medical Education Dr Sharan Prakash Patil on Tuesday said the government is contemplating to bring a law for the regulation of admissions into deemed universities in the state from the next academic year.

Replying to a debate on the demands of medical education department, Dr Patil said at present, the state government has no power to regulate admissions into deemed universities. "The government has the authority to issue no objection certificate for a deemed university but no authority to demand the deemed universities to surrender some seats for the benefit of meritorious students from financially backward families,'' Dr Patil said.

The medical education minister also said the government plans to bring a law to regulate admissions in private medical colleges. "The government also doing its best to open more medical colleges to enable meritorious students from poor families to pursue medical education,'' the minister said.

He said the government has already approved the plan to establish super speciality hospitals in Bellary, Belgaum, Hubli, Gulbarga and Mysore. "Our plan is to have super speciality hospitals at all district headquarters to provide treatment for patients. We will establish super speciality hospitals at all district headquarters in a phased manner,'' the minister said.
Meanwhile, Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa advised the minister for medical education to ensure salaries for doctors working in government hospitals on par with the doctors working in medical colleges.
