The race to become the vice-chancellor of Bangalore University has kicked off. Many candidates have already started to try their luck for the post, and many have even initiated exploring of political routes to the top chair of the varsity.

Though all the aspirants in the race are strong with their supporters and godfathers, unfortunately for them, every candidate’s profile has some blot or the other.

The two main candidates in the race are the registrars of the Bangalore University. Registrar administration, BC Mylarappa, and registrar evaluation, RK Somashekar, are being seen as the frontrunners in the race, but there are ample opportunities for dark horses too.

Mylarappa has been trying to become the vice-chancellor of any of the state universities for almost five years. He first tried his luck when Tumkur University was formed. He even tried to become Bangalore University’s V-C when HA Ranganath left charge.

Mylarappa also tried his luck for Mysore University, but he could not succeed because of a number of charges against him. One strong allegation against Mylarappa is about the misappropriation of funds when he was a director for distance education. Another charge is that of helping his PhD student to copy his thesis.

Though Mylarappa has godfathers like former MLC Narahari, a RSS leader former Supreme Court judge, he failed to get into any of the above said universities mainly because of the allegations against him.

For Somashekar, being Vokkaliga is a plus point. There are rumours that the state higher education minister CT Ravi is favouring him because he belongs to the same community.
But, Somashekar too faces serious allegations like of sexual harassment from his colleague Nandini. There is another allegation against him of misusing university funds.

Another candidate Rangaswamy, who is the present finance officer of the university. As Rangaswamy he is the senior most dean/professor, and right now, is the acting vice-chancellor till the new V-C gets appointed. Though his academic and professional records are good, the charges against him can hamper his chances. There is also an allegation against him that he helped his family members to get PhD degrees.

ST Hinchageri, who was the registrar of Karnataka University, Dharwad, once missed a chance of becoming the V-C of the same university. Hinchageri is also being seen as a stong contender for the top post in the Bangalore University.

Principal of University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, KR Venugopal, is also said to be in the fray. Venugopal has tried his luck for universities of Tumkur, Mysore, Karnataka State Open University, Visvesvaraya Technological University and also for Bangalore University. All his attempt were futile because of fake caste certificate charges against him.

The last name, which is doing rounds in the university campus is of Dalit poet Siddalingaiah. Siddalingaiah is a senior professor in the Kannada department of the Bangalore University. Currently, he is the chairman of Kannada Pustaka Pradikara on deputation. Sources say that the biggest advantage of Siddalingaiah is his clean image.
