The detection of crime branch (DCB) have arrested five members of a gang involved in housebreaking across the state with a stolen booty of around Rs1.5 lakh on Friday. The alarming factor here is their dubious modus operandi, which is to target closed houses during weekends! The gang, which was active in the city for last few months, had conducted as many as six house breaks on different weekends.
DCB sleuths found out that the gang hails from Garbada area of Dahod and visits the city during weekends. They live in temporary shanties in the outskirts of the city and conduct intense reccé of the area and target houses, from where they decamp with maximum booty. They also broke into such houses in Anand, Kalol, Kadi, Godhra, Modasa, Viramgaam, Sanand and Himmatnagar apart from Ahmedabad.
Talking to media, joint commissioner of police, detection of crime branch, AK Sharma said that the gang was active on weekends when owners of such houses — particularly posh bungalows, flats and farm houses on the city outskirts — move out on weekends and they can target a closed house.
Cops said that soon after the theft, the gang escapes back to their home town in Dahod and return to the city only in the next weekend. “They normally come here on Thursday and Friday and go back on Monday,” a DCB source said. In the city, that gang attacked houses in the localities near the SP Ring Road at Odhav, Chandkheda, Chiloda and Nikol.
The five people arrested are – Jithra Katara, Hindu Bhabhor, Maju Katara, Malsingh Bhabhor and Chetan Bhabhor – all of them are residents of Garbada of Dahod. The police are expecting more detection of house breaks recently conducted in the localities at outskirts of the city.
