Gone are the days when doodling was considered an idle man’s game and the kitchen a woman’s domain. Animation and hotel management are among the most sought-after careers today.
On the magical world of animation and other career options available for those who dream in 3D, Abir Aich, director-academics, Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics, said with animation increasingly being used in films, television, commercials and also gaming, there is a lot to explore. “India is the largest film and television content producer in the world. Hence, there is a huge demand for creative artists and English-speaking manpower,’’ he said.

Among the various careers associated with MAYA software in animation are graphic designing, visual effects and 3-D modelling/ rendering. An animation artist creates a design and develops a character. Then there are different stages that go into making an animation, such as story board designing, texturing, lighting, rigging, set extensions.  “Modern games and even Oscar nominated films use animation. There are several Indian artists working in top animation studios today. It is a booming field,” he said.

Animation is also being increasingly used in e-learning material for educational institutes.  “Education content is creatively displayed through interactive boards and films to make education fun and interactive,” Aich added.

Those with a commercial arts specialisation would have the edge, but interest and talent is more important. Professor Ivan David from Kohinoor IMI School of Hospitality Management, Khandala, busted myths about the hospitality industry.

“Thinking about hotel management, one has a tendency to imagine himself as a waiter or cook or room service boy. But one needs to know that a degree in hotel management is much more than this and provides job profiles which are at least five steps ahead of these.”

“The hospitality industry is the second largest employer in the world. In India, different chains of hotels—international and domestic —and increasing number of business travellers bring several opportunities in this industry.”

Highlighting people’s attitude towards the industry, David said: “Youngsters have vague understanding about the opportunities available in this profession. While a trainee manager in a hotel gets Rs15,000 to Rs18,000 a month, there are many opportunities to grow fast after completing the training.” “One just has to decide job profile suiting his/her aptitude and interest. There are list of profiles such as front office managers, kitchen staff, chef, food and beverage serving and room service,” he added.
