As we commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day, the efforts of institutions like Maharashtra Pollution Control Board assume even greater relevance.

In recent years, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has launched several initiatives taken to increase awareness about preserving the environment and they have made a difference in terms of checking pollution levels.

MPCB monitors air quality levels throughout the year via its 76 Ambient Air Quality Monitoring stations in Maharashtra and the festive season witnesses a greater focus and with good reason. It has been observed that during Diwali the air in some parts of Mumbai records over 450 micrograms of SPM.

Increasing awareness among the public is the key to tackling this problem and MPCB has been actively pursuing this concept. The Board has also started the National Green Corps, on the lines of the NCC, targeted at children to educate them on environment-related issues.

To bring the relevant facts before the people, details about air and water quality levels are put up on the MPCB website so people can get a firsthand idea of what is being done and what needs to be done.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board website - http://mpcb.gov.in - is very informative and regularly updated.  One can just click a specific city on the state map provided and instantly get details of the ambient air quality monitored at the different stations.

MPCB has also conducted detailed in-house exercise for identifying new stations for AAQM monitoring. MPCB has developed thematic plans such as air quality action plans for the cities of Pune, Solapur, Chandrapur and Mumbai.

These air quality action plans have been developed by MPCB in response to the directions from the Supreme Court in partnership with urban local bodies.

In addition, MPCB has developed a collaboration with leading educational and research institutes like I.I.T., NEERI, UICT, NITIE, NIO for industry specific issues, advance modelling, interpretation of available data, trend analysis etc. as a part of capacity building in the field of pollution control.

MPCB has taken up some specific projects like environmentally sound alum manufacturing, coastal monitoring, evaluation of environmental status reports of ULB's, statistical and analysis of environmental data with these research institutes. MPCB has also engaged educational and research institutes in ambient air monitoring and also CETP evaluation studies.
