A relatively new desktop operating system called Remix OS, which happens to be a fork of Android, is going to be available in public beta form on 1 March. The cool thing about this operating system is that you can load it on to a thumb drive, plug it into a computer--even a dusty old 32-bit laptop or desktop you may have lying around--and put it back to daily duty, complete with a familiar desktop experience.

Remix OS looks a lot like the Android interface on phones, largely because it shares plenty of code with the popular mobile OS. However this desktop version brings the necessary support for a keyboard and mouse, along with necessities like a file manager, moveable windows, a taskbar and even a notification area on the right a la Windows 10.

And of course, because it’s based off Android it supports all of the Android apps you’re already accustomed to--whether it’s Zomato for ordering food to even the occasional bout of Candy Crush, you can now use all of these on the desktop. Of course, it can be used as a regular desktop OS for getting through a regular day with the Chrome browser, Gmail, Google Drive for accessing documents, even the Facebook app and other programs generally required over the course of a day.

However this version doesn’t include the Google Play Store, so it’s a bit of a process installing these apps. It consists of first side-loading Google Mobile Services: refer to the ‘Download and install Google Mobile Services on Remix OS’ from their website here.

The current developer version of the OS does not have automatic updates, so loading any subsequent version of this OS will require a fresh install. However this feature will be available in the beta version coming in March.

Also being a free operating system, Remix OS presents an intriguing option to the slew of Linux-based operating systems such as Linux Mint and Ubuntu that deliver a consumer-focussed desktop experience that costs little to nothing.
