A day after MC Mary Kom failed to get a wild card for Rio Olympics, 2008 Beijing Games bronze medallist Vijender Singh's hopes of making it also dashed following news of Vikas Krishan qualifying in the 75kg weight category on Thursday.

While the five-time world champion and London Olympics bronze-medallist Mary Kom was denied a wild card entry by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Vijender's desperate attempt to push AIBA-appointed ad-hoc committee to recommend his name for the same went up in smoke. This, after the news of Krishan qualifying in the same middleweight category in which Vijender used to compete during his amateur days before turning pro.

Vijender, who had been looking to participate in Rio after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) allowed pro boxers to compete in the Summer Games, would be ruing his luck. In his last-ditch attempt to put pressure on the ad-hoc body, the Haryana boxer on Wednesday wrote a letter to the Sports Authority of India director general Injeti Srinivas, requesting him to make efforts in securing a wild card under the AIBA's Tripartite Agreement with the IOC.

However, before Srinivas could react to his letter, Krishan's qualification from the ongoing World Olympic Qualification Event in Baku, Azerbaijan, put an end to all such possibilities.

AIBA's ad-hoc committee chairman Kishen Narsi blamed Vijender for delaying things on his part as Thursday was the last day to write to the IOC regarding any wild card quota.

"Was he sleeping for all these weeks when he was interacting with the media and not writing to the ad-hoc committee regarding his Rio participation? He is an icon player and knows the rules so well. Moreover, I have been with him in all the three Olympics he participated. He could have easily called or written to me earlier," Narsi said.

"There are primarily two reasons why he can't go to Rio. First, Krishan has qualified in his weight category, so the chapter is closed. Second, today (Thursday) was the last day to write to the IOC for any wild card entry and his application did not reach me. His promoter had already clarified that he wouldn't be released for Olympics," he added.

As far as Mary Kom's chances were concerned, the IOC's ruling that only those nations that have not had more than eight members as part of their overall contingent in the previous two Olympics will be granted wild card put paid to her hopes. India would have never figured in that list.
