Things may not have gone the way he wanted at A1 GP, but the former Team India rookie driver, Armaan Ebrahim is eager to set the record straight at the FIA Formula Two Championship beginning this May.

The Formula Two Championship, which is a low-cost feeder series for Formula One, will award F1 licenses to the top three drivers at F2. And that is Armaan’s target. “It would be great if I get an F1 license by the end of this year. That would just be amazing, but right now we are keeping ourselves open for a two-year programme,” Armaan said on the sidelines of the JK Tyre National Racing Championship at the Madras Motor Race Track here on Sunday.

The Formula Two car is scheduled to be launched on March 2, while the testing will take place during the first weekend of May in Snetterton, followed by another testing session in Silverstone. The season will kick off on May 29 in Valencia, Spain.

“Racing in Europe is something I have been looking forward to and with Formula Two, it will be a great opportunity. I will leave for Snetterton in April to get acclimatised to the conditions,” he said.

Pursuing Formula racing in a country like ours can have its own disadvantages, as Armaan pointed out, “I feel like racing once in a while to get geared for F2, but there’s really nothing I can do here. I do a little bit of karting when I go to Coimbatore. The last time I raced was in July. It gets really frustrating.”

Lack of funds forced Armaan out of the A1GP Championship last year, but the 19-year-old is positive about the future. “With Spice Energy pulling out as sponsors for Team India, things got difficult for me financially. I don’t have the money to pay the license fee. It’s too expensive. It’s not worth it,” Armaan said.

“But I am really excited about Formula Two. It is going to be completely different from A1 GP. All drivers will be driving the same car designed by the Williams F1 team. The really exciting part about the car is that the front wing, rear wing and dampers can be controlled by the driver from the steering wheel. This takes driving closer to F1. It will be a great learning experience,” he concluded.
