The 2020 Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix got off to a worrying note as the race was red-flagged following a horrific accident involving Romain Grosjean of the Haas racing team. The incident occurred on the very first lap of the race when the cars exited on the first corner and went down the high-speed straight. Romain Grosjean apparently collided with another drive and he went straight into the barriers at high speed. The barriers was destroyed and the car caught fire. Luckily, due to the high safety protocols and mechanisms in the F1 cars, Romain Grosjean suffered only minor injuries although he was slightly shaken.

David Croft, who was on F1 commentary duties on TV, spoke of the crash when he said, “The fact that Romain Grosjean has survived that crash is not only miraculous but quite frankly marvellous as well!,” Croft said on commentary. Many experts have said that the halo that surrounds the F1 car saved Romain Grosjean’s life. Without the halo, the impact would have been directly at the helmet of Romain Grosjean and it would have resulted in his death.

The Bahrain International Circuit’s official Twitter handle later issued a statement saying, “Statement from FIA on Romain Grosjean: “Update on Romain: he is stable and being taken by helicopter to the BDF Military Hospital for further evaluation.” As with all the motorsport community, we are thinking of him.

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion and the drive with the most wins in F1 history, tweeted his relief that Romain Grosjean was alright. “I'm so grateful Romain is safe. Wow... the risk we take is no joke, for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what we love to do. Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we've taken for Romain to walk away from that safely,” Hamilton tweeted.

Romain recovering well

Guenther Steiner, the team principal of the Haas racing team, issued a statement saying  that Romain Grosjean was alright. “"Romain is doing okay, I don't want to make a medical comment but he had light burns on his hands and ankles. Obviously he's shaken... I want to thank the rescue crews who are very quick. The marshals and FIA people they did a great job, it was scary"

The update was great news for the drivers who were anxiously waiting for Romain Grosjean’s progress. The race was halted for over an hour but the race was all set to resume. Lewis Hamilton, who secured his 98th pole position and is assured of the championship, will be aiming to extend his number of wins and end the 2020 season on the ultimate high.
