Of the 22 closed-circuit television (CCTVs) cameras installed along the riverside, PMC has activated four to monitor the situation. The remaining cameras will be functional soon, a civic official said.

To tackle the flood situation in residential areas which are close to riverbed, a flood control cell of PMC has been activated from June 1 that will be working round the clock till October 31.

The civic administration is concentrating on 11 areas, including Patil Estate slum area, Kamgar Putala slum, Phulenagar slum, Pulachiwadi slum, Khilare Patilnagar slum, Ambil Odha slum, the riverside area near Shivane, Katraj lake area, old bridge near Aundh, slum area near Harris Bridge in Bopodi and the riverside area in Sinhgad Road where waters could enter houses.

“We have observed that when the irrigation department releases water into the Mutha river from Khadakwasla dam at a rate of 40,000 cubic metre per second, water enters riverside houses.

PMC has identified 39 centres where people can be shifted in case the water level of rivers crosses the danger level. Warnings will be given to citizens staying near the flood line to vacate the place when 45,000 cubic metre water per second is about to be released from Khadakwasla dam,” a civic official said.

PCMC had activated its flood control cell at its head office to provide 24-hour service to citizens to tackle the flood-like situation in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The civic body has published helplines and phone numbers for citizens to tackle the emergency.

Pavana, Mula and Indrayani rivers flow in PCMC area. Major population of the twin town lives along the river banks. In 2005, these citizens were badly affected by the flood.

On 2nd day, 4,866 cusec water released from Khadakwasla

Due to the continuous rains, the irrigation department officials released 4,866 cusec water from Khadakwasla dam on Tuesday.
Khadakwasla Irrigation Division executive engineer BB Lohar said that this is the second consecutive day when water was released from the dam. “Since the catchment areas of Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams is receiving continuous rainfall, we had to continue releasing the water for the second consecutive day,” he said.

On Monday, 2,012 cusec water was released into Mutha river.
Before opening the gates of the dam, the irrigation officials had sent an intimation to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the fire brigade officers so that any untoward incident can be avoided after the water level rises in Mutha river.

Meanwhile, due to the continuous rainfall, water was released from the eight dams in the Bhima basin.

Taking into account the forecast of more rains by the India Meteorological Department, it is likely that more water will be  released from the Khadakwasla dam.
