The Wagle Estate police in Thane have arrested three persons, who used credit card numbers of customers to buy air tickets. The accused have been identified as a cashier at Globus Stores, Eternity Mall, Thane Dhananjay alias DJ Sadanand Shetty, a resident of Kisan Nagar, Wagle Estate, Shrikant Bhima Athawale, from Mulund and Sandip Harishchandra Kaneri, a Bhatwadi resident.

According to sources, the police received a complaint on November 11 from the ICICI Bank about credit cards of their customers being misused to purchase Kingfisher Airline tickets and other costly commodities. Bank officials also claimed that the credit-card holders had never made any transaction with the Kingfisher Airlines through the cards. During the probe, sub-inspector BB Chobhe noticed that last transaction on the credit cards of all victims was at Globus Stores, Eternity Mall.

When cops questioned staff at the store, they got suspicious about Shetty. Intense grilling made him confess. He squealed about the involvement of Shrikant Athawale and Sandip Kaneri. The trio has been remanded in police custody till November 18.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Kashinath Kachare told DNA, “Shetty is part of a racket. The kingpin, Mannan, is absconding.” Kachare said, “Shetty used to note down the three digit number on the back of the credit card everytime a customer paid by card. The number was passed on to Athawale and then to Kaneri. Mannan met Kaneri and Athawale at a Thane hotel.

Mannan’s  details were never revealed to the trio. Kaneri or Athawale used to pass on the credit card number to Mannan who then used it to purchase air tickets. Kachare also said that Mannan used to sell tickets to the needy posing as a booking agent of Kingfisher Airlines. “The accused sold air tickets worth Rs 2.25 lakh,” Kachare said.

ICICI Bank sources  said the fraud is likely to be to the tune of Rs 10 lakh.
