To beat water scarcity in the city, active residents of Thane Matdata Jagran Abhiyaan (TMJA) have come up with various conservation measures for the citizens as well as the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). Some of these include a mandatory borewell in each society, rain harvesting project, construction of wells in hilly areas to arrest rainwater.

With each passing year, water scarcity becomes a burning issue in Thane as the seven municipal corporations undertake water-cuts to save water in the reservoirs till the advent of monsoon in June. Though they assure each rainy season that there is enough water to last the summers, somehow the stocks dwindle by April-May. Since Thane does not have a dam of its own, many areas face over 30 per cent water cuts.

Hence, to ensure that such a situation does not arise in future, TMJA is creating awareness about water conservation measures in the city. "Thane receives abundant rainfall every year, water scarcity prevails in the district. Also, we also do not have a dam. Hence, it is necessary to take certain measures to fight water scarcity in Thane," said Sanjeev Sane, a member of TMJA.

He added, "The TMC should make it mandatory for all housing societies to have borewells in their compound. And those who have one should recharge regularly."

Moreover, they also want the TMC to make it compulsory for societies to harvest rainwater. "A well should be dug after every 200 meters in the hilly area from Thanechecknaka to Gaimukh," he added.

When contacted Sandip Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner and public relations officer, TMC said," Rainwater harvesting is mandatory for all the new housing societies coming up in Thane. We offer a rebate of 5 per cent in property tax to old societies which undertake the same," said Malvi.
