Sportsman, 4 of family die in road accident on Mumbai-Goa Highway

Kaustubh Shete, 22, a national level basketball player from Vashi and four others of his family met with an unfortunate accident on Tuesday. Shete along with his parents, brother and a cousin brother died on the spot. While another cousin brother got fractures.

The accident happened in Kondmala near Chiplun on Mumbai-Goa Highway. According to the Sawarde police officials, the accident happened at around 2.50pm when the car that Shete was driving hit against a ST bus.

According to Shete’s friends in Vashi, the family had gone to visit their native place near Maharashtra border and the accident happened while on their way back to Mumbai.

“We have reported the accident and so far no case has been registered against any one. We are looking in to the case, in the course of investigation we will register a case,” an official from Sawarde Police Station said.

A final year BSc pass out student from Ruia College, Shete was the most achieved basketball player from Fr Agnel Multipurpose School in Vashi. He had played 10 National tournaments among which for one he won gold medal besides he has also played India camp. “He was the best player I have ever seen. He was shy and soft spoken but when it came to games, he was the most talented. All the basketball fraternity knew him very well due to his talent,” said Ravi Nair, the head coach of the school.

While the Sawarde police officials have confirmed that the body of Shete and his family members will be sent to Navi Mumbai after the post mortem is done, his friends in Vashi wait to see him for the last time.
