Given the pride of place that the guru-shishya tradition enjoys in the country, it is no surprise that there are several Guru Purnima celebrations organised across the city on Monday. But among the bevy of such programmes, the one drawing maximum interest is the one being organised by the students of Ustad Allarakha Institute of Music.

This young generation from the Punjab gharana will pay tribute to the legend, Ustad Allarakha Khan, or Abbaji (as he is fondly referred to), by holding a special percussion concert. Institute dean and acclaimed tabla exponent Fazal Qureshi, the son of the late Ustad Allarakha Khan, told dna, “On the occasion of Guru Purnima, we wanted the new generation to be given a platform to express themselves through tabla. This gives them confidence and encouragement.”

This year, he has chosen his student Unmeesha to display her acumen in front of the ‘Khalifa of Punjab Gharana’ and international legend Ustad Zakir Hussain, Qureshi’s brother. “She is one of our best students,” said Qureshi. Another female student from the institute, Anuradha Pal, has already become a household name.

Kulwinder, a student and himself a teacher from the Punjab branch of the institute, will bring three of his students to present a tabla performance. Like Kulwinder, senior student Yogesh Samsi too will make a presentation with his students. “We want our teachers to see what we are doing with whatever we have imbibed from them so that they can keep on guiding us,” said Shamsi.

While a solo tabla performance by Fazal Qureshi is something many will look out for, the pièce de résistance will be the finale by Zakir Hussain, who said, “The guru is given the highest respect in Indian culture and in Indian classical music.

With the assistance of a guru or teacher, one learns about the philosophy of life and via music one is able to study and absorb India’s heritage and Indian culture. Occasions like these help us keep in touch with our culture, heritage and Indian identity.”
