Here is a chance to tell Indian Railways about the poorly maintained toilets at railway stations. From October 2, if anyone finds ugly looking stinky toilet at railway stations, they can bring it to the notice of Indian Railways. As part of it people can take up the social media handles or WhatsApp numbers to complain, if they find unclean, stinky toilets at railway stations. The WhatsApp number for the Western Railway is 9004499773, while those on Central Railway can report on 9987645307.

These numbers were started on July 31 and are manned by the twitter cells. Senior railway officials promised that immediate action shall be then taken based on the feedback they receive. The Central and Western Railways have taken up mammoth task of cleaning up 187 toilets across Mumbai suburban stations that is used by lakhs of people daily. On CR, there are 117 toilet blocks and 75 toilet blocks on WR on its Mumbai suburban system.

"We are looking at overall upgrade of these toilets at railway stations. We will also be constructing toilets for Divyang (physically challenged) commuters at all stations by September 30," said SK Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Central Railway.

In the coming days, detailed inspection will be carried out by the railway officials of these toilet premises where condition of tiles, faucets, taps, pipeline, water connection, exhaust, lights etc would be done. "It is the duty of people as well to ensure that they use these public toilets well and do not damage them," said Subhash Gupta, president, Mumbai Rail Yatri Sangh.

The railways have already begun using industrial chemicals and pheynl for cleaning, air fresheners to tackle foul smell and exhaust fans too. They are fixing 150-200 watt bulbs to improve lux levels. This will brighten toilet premises instead of the current gloomy looking ones.
