The Bombay High Court gave permission to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) on Friday to carry out work on the underground Metro 3 Line around the clock for the next 18 months. The Metro will ply between Colaba to Seepz, and currently, construction is underway at Cuffe Parade.

While allowing the plea filed by the state government, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice Girish Kulkarni directed MMRCL to strictly follow the recommendations given by NEERI to minimize noise pollution at night. MMRCL will also have to set up a grievance redressal mechanism within a week to aid the citizens complaint mechanism.

The corporation can now start tunnelling work and enlist around 400 trucks to move excavation debris to Bhiwandi for dumping. Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni had argued that work will have to carried out between 10 pm to 6 am so that traffic flow in the city is not affected.

In December 2017, the high court had restricted MMRCL from carrying out construction work at night time, saying it created noise pollution and disturbed residents.
