State housing body MHADA has decided to cut down the number of houses for MPs and MLAs in its lottery by half and has introduced a 1 per cent quota for orphans and sportspersons, said a top official on Friday. The decision will now be sent to the state government for approval.

The slash in the quota for the members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly – current and former – from 2 per cent to 1 per cent is in the lower-income category, said MHADA President Uday Samant. However, the politicians will be eligible for 2 per cent reservation for other categories. Orphans and sportspersons will get the new quota in all segments.

MHADA builds dwelling units for four income categories – Economically Weaker Section, Lower Income Group, Middle Income Group and High Income Group. There has been a constant demand for the removal of MP/MLAs quota from EWS and LIG on the grounds that they mostly do not fall under these brackets and that very few apply for such homes.

In its lottery held last August, of the 173 houses reserved for MPs and MLAs in the lower-income category, MHADA received only two applications.

A senior MHADA official said, "There was a demand for cutting down these reservations. Also, after the state decided to provide more facilities to orphans, MHADA too moved to add a quota for them. And when we have quota for artists, why not sportspersons."

Another senior official said very few MPs and MLAs go for MHADA lottery. The legislators enjoy several facilities across the state, including societies that they have formed in the past and availed homes, he said.

The housing body on Friday took another important decision with regard to its plots given to societies and organisations. Citing a new rule, sources said, these entities must complete work on MHADA plots in three years. While they will be given a nominal extension to finish work, MHADA will take over the property in case of more delay.
