The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) played the people card on Saturday, saying that it would adhere to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's instructions to include the public's suggestions and aspirations while finalising the manifesto. Welcoming ideas via email or on its website, the party also said it would organise Jan-Sunawai (public hearing) programs in all parts of the state before giving finishing touches to the manifesto.

The party's manifesto committee met in the city last week and held discussions on the document, which is in its final stages of drafting. "We already have appealed to people through regional conventions to send their proposals and ideas for overall development," said Madhav Bhandari, chief spokesperson for the party's state unit and head of the manifesto committee.

Two other members of the manifesto committee, including national vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Ganesh Haake, were present at the meeting. Bhandari said that the manifesto would present the picture of Maharashtra which BJP wants to develop as the leading state in the country. It will have our ideas of infrastructure, health, education among other sectors, he said, making it clear that BJP would have a separate manifesto.

Party leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said there are good schemes of BJP-ruled states like Madhya Pradesh where the accountability of the government is achieved through a time-bound delivery mechanism of services. He said that providing soil health cards to farmers using mobile phones does not need rocket science, assuring that the BJP would provide schemes and programs to empower people from all walks of life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had felicitated citizens who had suggested the name for the recently launched Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Modi had even taken a minister to task for not inviting content of an advertisement for his ministry from people. All ministers have been instructed to appeal to the people by putting up their plans on the ministry's website.
