After coming down heavy on vehicles parked illegally, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is contemplating concessions for local residents at some public parking lots. These could slash the rate for monthly passes by 50%.

The decision will be taken on a case-to-case basis for each of the 26 public parking lots and will apply only to individuals, not commercial establishments or professionals. "It will apply to selected parking lots nestled in largely residential areas and to only one car per flat," said Municipal Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi.

On Thursday, DNA had reported that residents had found rates at BMC-run public parking lots unaffordable and had demanded concessions. Residents of Parel and Worli were among the first to protest, and soon those living in Nepean Sea Road joined in. A group of south Mumbai residents even met a senior BMC official in this regard.

The civic body has 26 public parking lots with 22,000 slots. Many of them remained empty for years, while two and four-wheelers lined the streets around. Pardeshi had declared that fines up to Rs 23,000 would be slapped on vehicles found parked within 500 metres of a public parking lot from July 7 onwards.

"But the overnight charges and monthly passes are unaffordable for individuals, while professionals in corporate offices may be able to pay them," said Samadhan Sarvankar, a corporator from Prabhadevi.

"We will make a proposal and sent it to authorities. Only they can decide," said an official from G South ward. The ward comprises Parel, Worli and Mahalaxmi and has six public parking lots with over 10,000 slots.

Park Relief

  • Monthly passes have differential rates across the city, and are divided into three categories, depending on congestion.
  • South Mumbai lots come under Category A, while Central Mumbai lots come under Category B.

Current Rates

  • Category A: Rs 2,200
  • Category B: Rs 1,540
  • Category C: Rs 770
