Think of Patrick Bateman’s closet in 2000’s American Psycho and you’ve pretty much summed up the mood at the recently concluded London Fashion Week Men (LFWM) Fall 19. The oversized outerwear has emerged to be one of the key trends — voluminous parkas, statement trench coats and boxy top coats. Charles Jeffrey Lover Boy’s runway saw an oversized tartan top coat and Daniel Fletcher showcased a baggy trench. Kent and Curwen took inspiration from the hit show Peaky Blinders and sent out a hulking topcoat layered over a turtle neck. E Tautz and Oliver Spencer too had a slew of roomy top layer pieces among their offerings. Looks like the ’80s redux isn’t fading out anytime soon.

However, designers opine that these statement numbers look great on celebrities at the airport and in editorials, but make little retail sense. “In every social media campaign, brands give these looks to celebrities and you see them at the airports. Having said that, I am not sure how much these translate into sales. Luxury retail will continue to favour slimmer silhouettes with everyone getting super fit,” says designer Troy Costa.

NEO ’80S REDEFINED

Sylist Isha Bhansali seems upbeat about the colour blocked layering, which gives it an ’80s feel. “The trench layering at the London Fashion week feels quite summer even though it’s a Fall 19 trend. These pieces work well on guys who are lean. Personally I liked Daniel Fletcher and Olivier Spencer interpretation of this trend,” says Isha.

Stylist Divyak D’Souza opines that these pieces are restrictive in terms of the body type. “If you’re on the petite or heavier side, you may not feel comfy in them. It’s about the balance of proportions and not everyone has that understanding. Having said that, in terms of red carpet and celebrities, it’s a hot trend.”
